President’s Message

Chase your dreams, but always know the road that’ll lead you home again. – Tim McGraw

Find and follow the road home to the Ray E. Cramer Marching Hundred Hall on October 11-12, 2019 for Indiana University Homecoming! Last year we celebrated the dedication of Marching Hundred Hall and for the first time had the privilege of enjoying our new Homecoming headquarters to practice, eat, and partake in Hoosier fellowship. The best news – the new digs provide plenty of room for everyone who wants to join in – whether you play every day or have to dust off your instrument. So don’t be shy, get out your instruments, drums, flags and red boots, take the road home, and join the Marching Hundred Alumni Band to rock THE ROCK at Memorial Stadium!

The weekend is packed full of activities, including the Homecoming Parade on Friday evening, early Saturday morning rehearsal for the noon Football game, and our amazing musical performances at Pre-Game and Halftime as we watch our Hoosiers defeat Rutgers. Along the way you can admire the new baritones purchased with gifts from alumni, as we continue our work to acquire matching instruments. See this edition of the Rusty Pipes for the complete schedule, accommodations, registration information, music, award nominations and links to order your Marching Hundred Alumni apparel.

Special thanks to the Marching Hundred Alumni Council Directors, IU Alumni Association, and Professor Woodley who work tirelessly all year to enhance our Marching Hundred Alumni Experience! Looking forward to seeing you in “Back Home Again in Indiana” for Homecoming, where you can “Sing, Sing, Sing.”

RedSteppers Reunite in the Sisterhood of the RED Boots for Homecoming 2019!

Maybe it’s been a few years, or decades since you danced in your RED boots…and no matter how long, please join us for the RedStepper alumni pre-game dance at Homecoming this year!

A new tradition begins this year: A RedStepper Reception AFTER the Homecoming Parade on Friday, October 11 with a chance to mingle with the current RedSteppers, share a few memories, and meet the new RedStepper Coach, Brookelyn Wood. See all the details HERE including the link to this year’s routine, so you can begin learning the dance “Think!”

You may have noticed that the RedSteppers are now being referenced as IU RedStepper Dance Team in order to improve the searchability and social media presence of group.

While high kicks, snazzy steps and the name of the group are well-known to IU students and alumni, those unfamiliar with Indiana University and looking for information about dance may not know the term. Adding the words “dance team” improves the visibility of the group and increases the chance that talented dancers can find and learn more about the RedSteppers through social media, and ultimately join this 47 year old Marching Hundred tradition.

Fun with Flags!

Alumni Flags, let’s celebrate the IU Bicentennial with a great showing at Homecoming! We will be premiering our brand new pre-game and halftime flags as well as brand new uniforms. Our new uniform is the Alumni Flag Corps long sleeve t-shirt or crewneck sweatshirt (or both), now available through the online apparel store, and black bottoms.

We will be marching in the Homecoming parade on Friday. Alumni Band rehearsal begins at 5:00 p.m. at Ray E. Cramer Marching Hundred Hall followed by the parade at 6:00 p.m. Alumni Flag Corps rehearsal begins one hour earlier at 4:00 p.m. for anyone who wants to come early to practice the parade, pre-game, and halftime routines. We will be gathering informally at Nick’s for anyone interested immediately following the parade.

Parade, pre-game, and halftime routines will be posted in advance on our Facebook page, Indiana University Marching Hundred Alumni Flag Corps. Please join our Facebook page to stay up to date on all Alumni Flag Corps news.

We’ve got new flags! We’ve got new uniforms! Now all we need is YOU! Let’s remind everyone what an important part of the Marching Hundred Tradition of Excellence the IU Flag Corps was and the Alumni Flag Corps is!

Please refer to the Homecoming registration for general information and the weekend schedule. If you have any questions, please contact me directly at

The Rusty Pipes Roving Band

The Rusty Pipes Roving Band – definition – a musical group comprised of members of the Indiana University Marching Hundred Alumni Band who rove among the tailgate groups in the IU Memorial Stadium on Homecoming Day with the intent to help build the spirit of the IU Alumni and to cheer on the IU Football HOOSIERS to a victory in the homecoming football game by cheering, singing and playing “Indiana Our Indiana” and “Indiana Fight.”

Does this sound like fun? Sure it does. So after you eat your lunch at homecoming this year come and join us in this tradition and see what a great time you will have.

Event: The Rusty Pipes Roving Band at Homecoming Football Game

When: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 12

Where: Meet in the front lobby of the Ray E. Cramer Marching Hundred Hall

What to bring: Everything you need for our performances at the game because once we leave to rove among the tailgates in the parking lots creating HOOSIER SPIRIT, we won’t be returning to Marching Hundred Hall. We will simply join the rest of the Alumni Band as they head to the stadium.

Who: All Alumni Band members who are interested – we at least need all parts covered

See you at Homecoming at 10:30 a.m. ready to show some HOOSIER SPIRIT!

Marching Hundred Alumni Awards

Each Homecoming, the MHAC awards the Newel Hillis Long Award (“Long Award”) to an outstanding alumni.  Recently, under the direction of MHAC Vice President Kyle King, a committee reviewed and updated the requirements for this time honored recognition.  Please see the revised description below:

Newel Hillis Long Award

This award is given to an individual who has exhibited a longstanding commitment to the Alumni band through regular attendance at homecoming, promotion of Marching Hundred Alumni activities amongst friends and colleagues, and enthusiastically seeks to assist the alumni band where possible.

Marching Hundred Distinguished Alumni Award

The committee also recognized that many Marching Hundred Alumni are not able to actively participate in Homecoming or other activities due the the press of their career or family duties, but nevertheless well represent Indiana University and the Marching Hundred Alumni. For this reason a new award has been created and will be awarded when an appropriate opportunity arises.

This award will be awarded to someone who meets the following criteria:

Is an alumnus/a of the Marching Hundred
Has achieved significant recognition or accomplishment in their chosen field (business, academic, military/government, the arts, etc.), community service or University service.
Is able to accept the award in person at Homecoming in the fall.

Do you know of someone who should be recognized for either of these awards?  No need to wait for Homecoming to let us know. The Marching Hundred Alumni Council is seeking nominations year round. Please submit your nomination below by September 30, 2019.
